PHILOSOPHY

1 Book

"The will of the individual is constantly struggling between the forces of instinct and the forces of civilization. The forces of instinct were greatest before there was any civilization. Civilized man has exchanged a portion his possibilities of happiness for a portion of security. It is impossible to overlook the extent to which civilization is built upon a renunciation of human instinct." - Neurologist Sigmund Freud

BOOK SUMMARY

Since the appearance on Earth of the first human species called Homo Erectus nearly 2 million years ago, humans have shared a profound interconnectedness with one another throughout history that continues to today. This human interconnectedness shaped human’s physical, emotional, and spiritual characteristics, including the inherited and inborn human will to survive on Earth. This will to survive manifested itself by the human will for power and control, aggression and violence, sexuality and children, and mysticism and spirituality. These manifestations still require people living today to find ways of dealing with their natural human will to survive, so they can live happy, successful, and fulfilling lives.

BOOK EXCERPT

All humans who ever lived on Earth possess an inborn will to survive on Earth which they inherited from the DNA and genetic instructions of their natural parents and ancestors. In his book “Civilization in Transition,” Jung wrote, “The unconscious [human will] is not just evil by nature, it is also the source of the highest good: not only dark but also light, not only bestial, semi-human, and demonic but superhuman, spiritual, and in the classical sense of the word, divine.”

Examining the objective real-life manifestations of every human’s natural will to survive on Earth provides additional understanding of the profound interconnectedness between each human who lived on Earth. For nearly 2 million years, beginning with the dawn of Homo Erectus in Africa, and ending with the dawn of human civilization in Mesopotamia, humans freely and authentically expressed their inherited and inborn will to survive by means of four behavioral manifestations. These four manifestations consist of the natural human will for power and control, aggression and violence, sexuality and children, and mysticism and spirituality. Let’s take a closer look at each of these four manifestations of the human will to survive on Earth.

The human will for power and control motivated, shaped, and directed our ancient human ancestors to exercise supremacy over themselves, their family, other humans, every living creature, and their environment. Examples include living in a safe shelter, securing a constant water supply, gathering edible vegetation, hunting for animals to eat, dealing with other humans, and adapting to changing weather seasons and environmental conditions.

The natural human will for aggression and violence motivated, shaped, and directed our ancient human ancestors to exercise physical force whenever necessary to maintain power and control over themselves, their family, other humans, every living creature, and the environment. Examples include killing wild animals and edible plants for food, harming and slaying animals and humans that threatened a family’s safety, shelter, food, and water, and physically modifying the environment to adopt to adverse weather and seasons.

The natural human will for sexuality and children motivated, shaped, and directed our ancient human ancestors to exercise sexual dominance over anyone, anywhere, anytime. Examples include engaging in sexual acts for power and physical pleasure, engaging in sexual relations without any external limitations or internal remorse, and engaging in sexual relations for the purpose of conceiving children who could assist with their family’s present survival and future survival of their DNA and Genes.

The natural human will for mysticism and spirituality motivated, shaped, and directed our ancient human ancestors to engage in religious ceremonies, rituals, and sacrifices on a daily basis. Examples include a belief in an almighty God or pantheon of Gods, meditation and prayer, chanting and shouting, dancing and leaping around a blazing fire, playing musical instruments, consuming intoxicating beverages, ingesting mind-altering plants, wearing elaborately adorned clothes, shoes, hats, and jewelry, and practicing animal and human sacrifices. Humans engaged in these behaviors and actions to achieve oneness and harmony within themselves and interconnectedness with the world. Humans also engaged in these behaviors and actions to insure their personal and family health, to bless their hunting of animals and gathering of edible vegetation, to fend off animals and humans that threatened their welfare, and to bring an end to a cold and barren winter and bring forth a warm and fertile spring.

In conclusion, pre-civilization humans embraced their inherited and inborn human will to survive by living a free and authentic life without restrictions or limitations imposed upon them by any governing political system. However, pre-civilization humans lived unsafe, solitary, poor, brutish, and short lives. As a result, humans eventually embraced a new lifestyle in post-civilization societies that promised them more personal security and economic prosperity, so long as they restricted and limited the free and authentic manifestations of their natural will to survive on Earth.
